- Indianapolis 500 Centennial Era Balloon Festival: Hare and Hound Race: 7:30 a.m. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 4790 W. 16th St. Although the infield is closed because of the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, fans may watch balloons ascend from numerous points around the facility. The hot-air balloons race to a designated spot. The Hare balloon goes first, flying approximately 15 minutes in front of the other balloons. The Hare balloon flies to an appropriate landing spot, where a race official will place a target on the ground. The Hound balloons and the rest of the field attempt to navigate to the Hares landing site and drop a 2-ounce bean bag closest to the center of the X target. The winner is the pilot who drops a bean bag closest to the center of the X. Also, appearance by Energizer Bunny Hot Hare Balloon, which is the tallest hot air balloon in the country. It towers 15 feet over the Statue of Liberty and weighs half a ton. - 500 Festival Mini-Marathon: 7:30 a.m. White River State Park, 801 W. Washington St. Largest half-marathon in the United States with 35,000 participants. Starts and ends near Washington and West streets and includes a lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dozens of entertainment groups and spirit squads.
