Award-winning Shreveport, Louisiana motorcycle builder Steve Culp is preparing for Bike Week with a bike that should take Daytona by storm. His 2010 BMW S1000RR sport bike has been reconfigured in a most unusual wayas a heavily-muscled retro Street Fighter. The S1000RR, the newest addition to the BMW stable, is a liter machine with the highest power-to-weight-ratio in its class. Though screaming fast while standing still, the bike is also equipped with state-of-the-art safety, including ABS brakes and traction control. A gearshift option allows upshifting without clutch to save additional milliseconds in the race.
The bike was what I call the typical Ricky Roadracer type when it came out, says Culp. There were a lot of plastic bits, just waiting to get scraped off in a high-speed slide. I decided to scrape them off first and see what was underneath. Once I did, my plan came together quickly. This bike is the meanest-looking bike ever to come out of our shop, and one of the absolute coolest. Not only does it look awesome, it is going to be a tremendous riding bike. It would be hard to ask for more.
The transformation from plastic to custom is always time-consuming, and the S1000RR was no different. Culp estimates the build took 400 shop hours and included changes to almost everything: the fairings, tank cover, mount for the instrument cluster, the seatmount for the subframe. The grab bar behind the seat is a 1930s Indian rear fender guard and exists for more than esthetics. "Everyone who rides an S1000RR tends to wheelie it," says Culp. "The grab bar is to keep them on the seat." So much about this street-fighting S1000RR is custom that it is often easier to say what is not: the wheels and tires, frame, engine. Period.
Culp managed to mesh very new and vintage in unusual and striking ways. The bike is the traditional old school BMW black with thick white pinstripe, but the black includes touches of metal to make it shine in the sun. Other vintage touches include fringed solo tractor seat, the style of the front and back fender, fender braces, headlights, handlebars, bar end turn signals, megaphone exhaust, taillight frame and a taillight off an early 1920s Buick. Culp has a history of building (and winning for his builds) classic caf racers based on Japanese lineage. He decided to go bigger, badder and meaner this year to up the ante. I dont think anyone is going to expect this, says Culp. Street Fighters are normally Japanese bikes, not a hot rod European brand, and especially not one that looks like this. Culp is right. Comments on the bike have ranged from cool to incredulous, but one thing is constant. People cannot tear their eyes away from this most amazing build.
