Top 10 Ways to save energy--and money-- on your vacation

In honor of Earth Day, our column is on our top ten ways to be environmentally responsible and save energy (and money) while traveling.

1--Pack light. Youll save on baggage fees and consume less fuel. It will be much easier to get around, and youre more likely to benefit from Tip 2..

2--Ride the ultimate carpool. Use public transportation when possible. Its also a chance to mingle with locals. Some of our most interesting conversations have originated on buses and trains.

3--Rent a bike. Rentals are low-cost transportation options, especially in many European cities. Canadas Montreal has an inexpensive BIXI program. Environmentally vigilent Switzerland has a system of bicycle rentals for their 40,000 miles of trails.

4--Walk. Youll discover things you would never notice while in traffic--and wont feel as guilty when you indulge in the local dessert.

5--Use shuttle services. Check to see whether your hotel offers complimentary airport transportation.

6--Save a tree. Borrow guidebooks from the library. Download destination apps and maps to your smart phone or other electronic device. "The important to budget travel is to plan in advance.
