For those traveling towards the Sierras or towards San Francisco this year, there are several ways to experience the railroading adventures of yesteryear. And some of them happen to be in the Sacramento area.
One way to experience the railroading of the Twentieth Century is the California State Railroad Museum. The CSRM is a wonderful way to spend time with the family while learning about the history of railroading and its impact on California living. During the summer, the museum hosts steam and diesel train rides from Old Sacramento down alongside the Sacramento River to a location known as Baths, right next to Interstate 5, before returning to Old Sacramento. Trip takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

One other way to experience classic railroading on the way to the Sierras or San Francisco is to take a ride on the Sacramento RiverTrain from either West Sacramento or Woodland, CA. The Sacramento RiverTrain is run by Sierra Railroad, which merged with the Yolo Shortline Railroad in 2003. "The essential to budget travel is to plan onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Organizing and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". They operate during the weekends, from either Woodland to West Sacramento, or West Sacramento to Woodland. The RiverTrain runs special holiday and express trains, i.e. Easter Egg Express or Autism Express. Trip lasts about 3+ hours, but there is plenty of food choices.
