The Esplanade is composed of the land adjacent to the Charles River located on the Boston side of the waterand by bike there are plenty of paths to whiz up or dawdle down, optional offroad trails, and lots of twoand fourlegged obstacles along the way. Although this narrow patch of green is wedged between the water and Storrow Drive, its jam-packed with activities, beautiful scenery, and places to stop for hot dogs or ice cream (this way you can simultaneously burn off last nights budding saddlebags while still managing to generate todays!).
Although theEsplanade is a topic unto itself, since were pedaling through it, there wont be much time to sunbathe or feed the ducks today. Instead, from the base of the Mass Ave Bridge, where we left off last time, well head East (left for those of you without a built in corporal compass) and past some runners, rollerbladers, and folks who love public calisthenics (yes, there is a pull up bar/wooden masochist funhouse set up along the way if youre interested in getting buff/splinters). About a half a mile down, the bike path breaks apart and gives you the opportunity to stay the course with the hustle and bustle of Storrow on your right sideor to ride up and over a little bridge and enter into serenity. Generally, bikers who wish to lollygag choose serenity, while those who are looking to get down, and into town stick to the clearly defined biking speedway. For decisiveness sake, lets choose serenity.
Separated by a stretch of water, called Storrow Lagoon (although I dont think any Bostonian has ever called it this?), this little island paradise is covered in willows, dogwoods, and plenty of grassy patches. Its an ideal place to chill with dogs, watch sailboats, and sunbath. Bikers should be careful though, since most people who soak in this paradise have no freakin clue where theyre walking or that theyre about to get clipped by your Huffy. Still, this strip provides a breathtaking view of just how gorgeous this city can be for about 4 to 9 days per year, and is well worth the detour on your bike tour.
Once we hit the next bridge, which is our passageway backyou should run right into the DCR Hatchshell where the Pops play on 4th of July, and the home to many other free concerts and movies during the summer. There are also many vendors and food stands around this areaso this is a great place to take a breather if you need it.
From here, we head on past some great places to launch a schoonerincluding Community Boating Inc, of Boston which offers economical ways to get you into water and loving life. There are also several picture-perfect baseball fields in this areaalthough they are mostly swarmed by just-out-of-college-just-hitting-the-working-world-just-trying-to-pretend-Im-still-young softball teams most of the time, so if you bring your glove keep an eye out for the opportune moment to siege the mound. The Esplanade truly is an ideal place for the outdoor-enthusiast-meets-city-dweller in all of us, and by bike you can cover a lot of gorgeous ground in under twenty-minutes or so; although I dont know why you would ever want to speed by with the views and to-dos that this little slice of heaven offers. Take some time to exhale and enjoy.
Thats it for now weve biked too far and Im tired. Lets check our spokes and gears in the interim, and Ill meet you at the Salt and Pepper Bridge as soon as were ready for the next round. For now, enjoy the viewand some pictures I captured on my last ride over!
