Yesterday Orbitz enacted its "Open Beach Guarantee" allowing full refunds to customers who booked a standalone hotel reservation (not part of a package deal) if their hotel is closed due to the BP oil spill. The destinations must be within 20 miles of a beach the government has either closed or declared dangerous.
As of June 14, the "Open Beach Guarantee" only applied to Florida beaches, but Barney Harford, president and CEO of Orbitz Worldwide, assured customers in a press release that further measures are being explored. While our initial focus is Florida, we are working with hotel partners to quickly extend this guarantee to other Gulf Coast beach destinations," Harford said.
Customers staying in other areas of the golf coast may not get a refund, but they can keep updated on Orbitz.com for further developments in the movement of the oil spill and information about their hotel destinations.
