Imagine spending a vacation on Mackinac Island, where no automobiles are allowed and visiting historic Victorian buildings and homes where wealthy 19th century families vacationed. Theres abounty of history here where Indians, fur traders, British and American soldiers once lived.
Fort Mackinac, built in 1780 to protect the Great Lakes Fur Trade, still stands today. During the summer months costumed guides act out daily activities including cannon firing demonstrations. Buggy rides are a popular way to see the island. Many visitors choose to rent a bike during their stay and travel the eight miles around the island's perimeter, on M-185, a scenic shoreline road that is the only U.S. state highway without motor vehicle traffic.
Explore the historic, natural beauty of Mackinac Island State Park, honored by National Geographic as one of the ten finest in America. In June the island celebrates with its annual Lilac Festival which includes entertainment and a colorful horse drawn parade. By day downtown Mackinac offers tours of historic homes and businesses like the Blacksmiths Shop.By night good times and good food abound on the Island. Patrick Sinclairs Irish Pub features an award-winning Shepherds Pie as well as nightly entertainment and Karaoke. Horns Gaslight Bar & Restaurant has a menu of American and Southwestern cuisine, and offers live entertainment nightly.
The most spectacular landmark on the island is the remarkable Grand Hotel, set majestically atop a hill. Recognized in 2008 and 2009 by Travel & Leisure Magazine as one of the Best Hotels in the World, the property originally opened in 1887 and has been the setting of two movies. Even if you do not stay at the Grand, be sure to visit this magnificent structure. Hint: If you do stay here breakfast and dinner are included daily in all guest room rates, and guests 11 years-old and younger stay and eat FREE.
Dog lovers who want to bring the pooch can find accommodations at several island properties including Mission Point Resort (800-833-7711) and Great Turtle Lodge (877-650-4600)
Part of the fun is getting to the island. After driving to Mackinaw City from Detroit, you can take one of two ferries across Lake Huron to Mackinac Island, leaving your car behind in a secured lot. Then your adventure begins.
