As a wife and mother who prides herself on saving as much money as possible, I still cannot bring myself to cut a vacation from our budget, and in the current economy we are constantly being reminded of how we should not waste our money. All that being said, for many people, when it comes time to plan a vacation, the word budget is almost an instant joy kill. But it doesn't need to be, there are many small tweaks a person can make to their travel plans that can in fact save money and add fun all at the same time.
As a rule of thumb the easiest way to save on a vacation is to travel close to home. This does not mean stay in your town, or even in your county, it just means to travel in a relative close circle...say a couple of hour drive. This helps for a variety of reasons. First, and most obvious, is the money you will save driving say 200 miles versus plane tickets, or the gas money you will save by driving 500 or more miles. In addition by driving for about 3 hours for a 200 mile drive you make your vacation seem longer while spending less on hotel stays. For instance if you leave the house at 7:00 AM you can be at your destination by about 10:00 AM resulting in an early start on the day. This can create a full day of vacationing before you have even checked into your hotel or campground.
Another easy way to alleviate your travel costs is to plan your meals. Whether this means bringing a picnic lunch on your daily adventures or staying in a hotel that is equipped with a kitchenette. There are many vacations we have gone on as a family that we have ate in our room, whether it be ordering pizza in, having TV dinners, or making a simple meal; and it has always been fun for us.
When planning a vacation another key way to save money is the kind of activities you plan. For instance if you choose to go to a state park, national park, zoo, or beach, the entrance fee is low cost while providing hours of fun. At that parks and beach you can camp, picnic, bike ride, swim, all those outdoors activities that make memories. If that is not your cup of tea, try the zoo, museums, or look for a drive-in movie. One of the most memorable vacations we have as a family centered around a trip to a drive-in.

Be sure to keep this in mind when you start planning yours, in more recent years vacations have become overwhelmed with cost, stress, and to many activities.
