No one lives in Minnesota for the exhilarating topography, so why not take the opportunity to discover the beauty of a true prairie landscape?

In Southwestern Minnesota, you'll find unique experiences that offer a glimpse into the past and subtle beauty as far as the eye can see. It's a great option for a low-cost and close-to-home summer outing for people of all ages.

Blue Mounds State Park
This is a great park to visit at any time, but June and July offer a unique enticementthe park is an ideal home for Minnesota's only native cactus, the prickly pear, and it sends up its canary yellow flowers during those months. The cactuses are tucked in around the outcroppings of ruddy Sioux quartzite. The rocks jut up100 feet, in some placesfrom the tranquil sea of prairie grass. Clamber (carefully) up the rocks to take in sweeping views. The park's herd of bison adds to the step-back-in-time atmosphere, and the abundance of tallgrass prairie birds makes for a fun spotting game. Camping is available (and there are showers available for the fastidious among us); check the Minnesota DNR Web site for details.

Pipestone National Monument
This one-of-kind site is truly a national treasure, and combines history and natural wonder. Native Americans consider this site, with its cliffs of red stone used for centuries in making pipes, to be sacred. The rock is still quarried (under extremely strict regulations), and you can watch rather hypnotic carving demonstration in the visitor center, which also houses an interesting museum and a gift shop where you can pick up a memento. To get in touch with the scenic beauty of the site, head out for a walk around Circle Trail. This 3/4 mile loop takes you past the quarries, the Winnewissa waterfalls and austere prairie landscape. Entry fees are $5.00 noncommercial vehicles, and the monument is open from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Jeffers Petroglyphs
You don't need to go to Australia or France to see prehistoric glyphs; save some cash and head down to Comfrey, Minn. instead. The Jeffers Petroglyphs site is a marvelsprawling, flat islands of red quartzite adrift in the sea of prairie grasses are dotted with carvings left by Native Americans over the course of an estimated 5,000 years. Depicted on the rocks are atlatls, bison, deer, elk, humans, turtles and thunderbirds, all of which provide clues into the lives of the people who inscribed them between about 3000 B.C. and 1750 A.D. There are two nature trails on the 160-acre site (3/4 mile and 1 1/4 miles) that take you past the glyphs and through the prairie scenery. Guided tours are available, and on-site staff can give you tips about the best times to see the glyphs (ideally, when shadows are stronger). The excellent visitor center has more resources to give to context to your visit. Pack a lunch and head for the sheltered picnic area for a scenic nosh.
Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and college students, $4 for kids ages 6 - 17, free for kids ages 5 and under and for Minnesota Historical Society members. Hours, through Labor Day, are M - F 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sat. The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Considering and expending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!. 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Sun. noon - 5 p.m. Different hours apply after Labor Day.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum
Whether you read the books or watched the TV series, familiarity with Laura Ingalls Wilder is as guaranteed (and beloved) a part of Minnesotan heritage as church basement suppers. Regardless of the medium in which you got to know the young Miss Wilder, visiting the museum dedicated to her is a great way to really connect with the story and more fully understand the reality of the life about which she wrote. The museum's collections are spread throughout a number of unique buildingsa depot, a chapel, an onion-domed house, and moreand include memorabilia from the TV series as well as artifacts from Laura's life.
