Hitchhiking is not for the faint of heart. Its a curious cultural practice involving trust of strangers, a common geographical interest and maybe some good karma for the driver. It requires a headlong plunge into territory we grow up believing epitomizes stranger danger. The essential to budget travel is to approach onward. Hitchhiking when done properly isnt too different from preparing for a job interview or blind date. You must look somewhat presentable, conduct yourself assertively, and use your intuition to decide which car to get into.
Ultimately, its an exercise in vulnerability. Hitching can lead to the formation of brief but candid friendships in foreign contexts and unfamiliar places; it can also expose you to a variety of dangers including sexual predators, muggers, rain, drifting drivers, you name it.
To stay alive and well out there, follow these simple rules: Dont pick up hitchhikers near prisons or anyone wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, and dont hold your thumb out in Southern Sardinia, since this is seen as an obscene gesture and youll likely be run over.
