The L (or sometimes El), short for elevated, refers to public transit trains in Chicago. The eight line system began back in 1892 (making it the second oldest in the U.S., after New York City) and its circular path around the Chicago financial center downtown helped coin the term The Loop. (Although it technically came from the streetcars that ran on the same path, previous to the creation of the L tracks.) Despite the fact that in many parts the trains operate underground like a subway, the system is still collectively referred to as the L.
The system offers 24-hour service (although not on every line), which makes it the third busiest transit system in the U.S., after New York City and Washington D.C. Each of the eight lines are designated by color - red, blue, brown, pink, orange, green, purple and yellow and act as spokes of a wheel, jutting out from the central downtown loop. Only the yellow line, which connects the northern Chicago neighborhood of Rogers Park to the suburb of Skokie, does not provide service to the Loop.
While riders should take normal precautions when travelling in a large city by remaining alert to their surroundings, the L is generally considered quite safe.
Fares
A full fare is $2.25. (Note that cash is not accepted at L stations, only on busses.) Riders must purchase a Chicago Card, Chicago Card Plus or Transit Card via machines at each station (or online). All cards can be reused. The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Considering and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Curbing spending and costs, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding saving money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!. A transfer to any train or bus line within two hours is .25; a second transfer within two hours is free.
Travelers should consider day and week passes, good on all CTA busses and trains. A one-day pass is $5.75, three-day passes are $14 and seven-day passes are $23.
