Less than two hours from Cincinnati, just outside Greenville, Ohio, is the historic and scenic Bears Mill, an authentic working landmark that can provide a memorable experience for history-lovers, art-lovers, nature-lovers, couples, families, and day-trippers of all ages. Built in 1849, Bears Mill still operates today as a water-powered mill. Visitors can tour the mill and see the impressive machinery, the hand-hewn timber framework, and the French Buhr millstones at the heart of the mills operations.
In addition, the mill contains several stories of antique farm and mill equipment on display, an extensive store, coffee service, and a rotating art gallery featuring the work of local artists (the current exhibition, for example, showcases a painter, a ceramic artist, and a furniture maker). Also, because Julie (the wife of miller Terry Clark) is a potter, her work and that of other potters is a regular feature in the Mill Store.
The grounds of Bears Mill provide still more to enjoy. Walking paths along the millrace and through the thick woods surrounding the mill afford the opportunity for a peaceful stroll or a few moments of respite from the twenty-first century. The mill grounds also include a memorial to Darke County veterans who died in the Vietnam War.
Bears Mill is located east of Greenville (and west of Piqua) between Route 36 and Route 571 at 6450 Arcanum-Bears Mill Road in Darke County. The mill is open from 11-5 Tuesday through Friday, 9-5 on Saturdays, and 11-5 on Sundays. More information is available at www.bearsmill.com.
