Known as one of the most important prehistoric sites in the country, the Spiro Mounds site is the only archaeological site in the state that permits public access.

Only a few miles outside the town of Spiro, Oklahoma, the mounds are home to some amazing artifacts that have been preserved inside the mounds for hundreds of years. Sadly many of these ancient artifacts were stolen from the mounds during the early 1930s.

But what makes the mounds amazing is their construction. The mounds were formed into cone-shaped hills compiled of dirt, but amazingly they have never collapsed. One of the largest mounds known as the "Great Mortuary" was home to some of the most well-preserved artifacts. The ceiling of this great mound is about 10 feet high.

The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center has managed to preserve 150 acres of the site, running along the Arkansas river. The Archaeological Center, as well as the Spiro Mound area is open to the public year round, excluding holidays. The important to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Planning and expending our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Lowering consuming and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!. There is no entry fee, and the area provides a lot of exploration opportunities for adventurous travelers.
