San Francisco, California-based Hotwire.com, a leading discount travel site, today released the December 2012 Hotwire special holiday edition of the Travel Savings Indicator, which features the top five cities in North America where hotel, air and car rental rates have dropped the most as compared to the holiday season last year. With overall average hotel prices up seven percent and air prices up nearly two percent over Christmas (travel December 22-26), those looking for a great deal this season can use Hotwires extensive pricing research to find the best destinations for maximizing their travel dollars.
Rising holiday travel costs are putting Americans in a real bind this season, but savvy travelers can still score some great deals to many popular destinations, said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. In fact, with folks traveling back to hometowns during this time of year, several larger cities and warmer leisure destinations are seeing a drop in prices in order to attract vacationers. That means those looking for a last-minute getaway instead of a traditional holiday at home can take advantage of the savings and enjoy festive attractions at some prime locales.
Biggest dips
Our nations capital tops the list of hotel price drops during the holidays with an 11 percent drop. Las Vegas ranked second in rate reductions with 10 percent drop on already great hotel rates. Denver too third place with a six percent decrease in overall prices followed by Houston and Chicago where rates fell roughly five percent.
Air fares yup slightly
Airfares this Christmas are up around 2 percent overall, but travelers can still score deals to destinations like Memphis (15 percent), Oklahoma City (13 percent) and Orange County (12 percent). Meanwhile, folks flying to Austin will witness an 11 percent drop while travelers to Tampa can save about 10 percent. "The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead. Car rental reductions
If youre renting a car, Tampa tops the list for lowest rates with a steep 29 percent drop. Meanwhile, Newark follows in second with a 21 percent drop, so if youre thinking of renting a car in the NY Metro Area for the holidays, the savings could be worth it to use this great alternate destination to access New York City. Memphis comes in third with a 17 percent drop, followed by Miami Beach with a 15 percent discount. Milwaukee rounds out the list in fifth place with an 11 percent drop.
