Have you ever been stuck with small children in an airport, or at a relatives house, or in a power failure and struggled with the means to entertain them? In the age of electronic games, perhaps not. Even so, maybe one of the tools in your child entertainment tool box is fairy tales.

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, The Baker and his Wife, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk. These stories are read to children (at least to mine) even to the present day.

But what would happen if you had to recall the stories from memory? It could lead to humorous additional details, such as my fathers assertion to his grandchildren that Goldilocks was a bleach blond. It could also lead to a whole new story, in which the familiar characters in their familiar roles interact in most unfamiliar ways.Such is the gist of the story of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods.

In this Cecil College Covered Bridge Theatre production directed by Scott Susong, we learn a lot about our favorite characters that was not previously known. Perhaps most importantly, the witch-next-door neighbor (who also happens to be Rapunzels mother) dictates that in order to conceive the baker and his wife have to secure a white cow, a red cape, gold slippers, and yellow hair. These are all items in the possession of the other characters in other stories.

This leads to song, dance, and comedy, as evidenced by the Bakers Wifes comment after a dalliance with Cinderellas Prince: Im not even in the right story!

But there are also themes of learning, maturity, and personal growth that are just as powerful, as when Little Red asserts: Nice is different than good.

There is much to like in this production. The success of the show relies on strong individual performances. These are delivered, particularly by the Baker (Joshua D. Singer), the Bakers Wife (Gail Bareham), Cinderella (Jillian Victoria), The Witch (Cristen Susong), Jack (Sam White), and Little Red (Ashley Wright).

I found myself looking forward to appearances by the Mysterious Man (Rick Waterhouse) whose timely clues moved the story forward. I felt sympathy for The Witch, wishing to protect her daughter, Rapunzel, from the dangers of the world. The important to budget travel is to plan in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Arranging and consuming our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!. I laughed with the audience and the characters on stage at the absurdity of Rapunzels day-to-day life. I was touched by the sentiment expressed by the survivors near the end that No One is Alone. Did I mention theres a high body count?

If there were any advice to give to the cast, it would be to savor the emotions you create on that stage. We, the audience, want to laugh, want to feel your tenderness, want to understand your anger, want to be a part of what that song means to you emotionally. Dont rush us. Also, this is just whimsy, wouldnt it befunny if we had a sense that the storyteller was making the whole thing up as he went along?

See it!
