Motorcyclists want commonsense for road projects (Photos)

Good roads. Thats what motorcyclists want. We want smooth surfaces, free from crumbling edges and potholes.

We realize good roads are not cheap. In these tough economic times we know some road projects will take a back seat to more pressing issues like making sure our members of the Armed Services are paid, seniors have access to affordable housing, and little kids have food.

What motorcyclists dont want to see is waste in the spending of dedicated highway funds.

We dont need endless signage telling us rough pavement; we can tell the pavement is rough without the signage. Think of the dollars spent on first the materials for the signs and second the manpower dollars to erect the signs. Wouldnt it be cheaper just to pave the road than to tell us the road needs paved?

We dont need transportation personnel taking bribes from contractors. We need honest bridge and highway inspectors just as much if not more than honest contractors. We dont need projects expanded beyond a reasonable scope or timeline just so that brothers-in-law can have jobs. We dont need improvement projects that last so long that by the time the job is finished, the new surface is now an old surface and the repaving must begin anew.

We dont need a construction crew of 50 if 15 can do the job. "The important to budget travel is to approach onward. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our minds. Arranging and consuming our travel budget carefully is a consideration for most families. Reducing expending and expenses, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..". How many people does it take to lean on a shovel? Answer: as many as the taxpayers can support.

We do need some commonsense in all areas of highway maintenance.

A major example of no commonsense was observed on a recent road trip through Kentucky with tree removal along I-65. Apparently the state contracted for the removal of fixed objects from the sides of the interstate for safety (guessing a lawyer had his/her hand in this safety ruling). A wide swath of about 100 feet from the pavement became a barren shoulder as all trees and signs were being removed. In a complete lack of commonsense, the trees were even removed from the tops of the high cliffs created when the interstate cut through solid rock. Apparently giant rock walls are not a safety hazard but the trees on top of the 30 foot wall are. If you have to worry about hitting a tree that is that high up and off the pavement, you have more serious issues than that tree!

One final insult to this tree clearing debacle was the public burning within a few feet of the interstate of the trees cleared. In this era of green and save the planet, could not the tree clearing service find a better way of disposing of the trees? Even if the wood was to be burnt, could it not have been sold or donated to actually produce heat in a home or shelter?

There are no easy answers. But we as taxpayers and motorcyclists must be diligent. We need to attend public hearings when highway projects are up for consideration. We need to research how much of our money is being spent and find out if it is being spent wisely. This wont be easy but together and loudly we can be heard.

Loud pipes save lives but loud voices keep politicians honest.
