Nada Tunnel, also known as the Eye of the Dragon, is a 900-foot-long tunnel through a mountain in the Red River Gorge area of eastern Kentucky. For the adventurous motorcyclist, this tunnel and the roads of the Gorge area should be on a bucket list of rides along with the more famous Tail of the Dragon.
The tunnel is near the small town of Nada on KY-77 and just north of the Mountain Parkway at the Slade and Natural Bridge State Resort Park at exit 33. If entering the area from the west and beginning the trip from Slade, take KY-11 north to KY-77 (right turn); the tunnel is just about two miles from this turn. From the east, exit the Mountain Parkway at exit 40 to KY-715 north following this road for about fourteen miles to KY-77 south (left turn); the tunnel will be three miles ahead.
Like its famous cousin, Tail of the Dragon, the Eye of the Dragon offers plenty of twisties. However, the roads in the Red River Gorge not only feature just as many, if not more, curves as US-129 in Tennessee but also challenge the motorcyclist with more up and down grades than you will find near Deals Gap.
From the west, the tunnel will serve as a gateway for the fun of those curves and hills around this canyon area of the Daniel Boone National Forest. If traveling from the east, the tunnel will serve as a landmark where one can say, Whew! I made it!
Some cautionary advice for riding in this area includes being prepared for the tunnel. "The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Considering and expending our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!..". It is of primitive construction with absolutely no light other than headlamps on your bike. Before entering the tunnel, be sure to remove your sunglasses and make sure your lights are all working. Also, this is a one-lane road; look through the tunnel before entering to be sure the lane is clear and if not, pull aside and wait. The pavement inside the tunnel is not great. The local populace uses this road regularly and have worn a path into the asphalt to the extent the center of the pavement is decidedly humped; chose which side of this hump to ride on when entering the tunnel and stick with that path. If deciding to travel through the tunnel anyway other than motorcycle, be aware that the width is only 12 feet; trucks and campers may scrape the sides. As for the ride through the Gorge, the roads are indeed a challenge but unlike US-129, there is very little traffic. It is a road to enjoy riding at ones own comfort level.
Construction of the Nada Tunnel began in 1910 with two teams working from each side of the mountain to dig a tunnel for logging; the crews used only steam jackhammers and dynamite to dig the tunnel. The teams eventually met in the middle and the first railcar went through in 1912.
The Red River Gorge is famous for sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and more than 100 natural bridges including the one at the namesake Natural Bridge State Resort Park. This area is a favorite destination for rock climbers as well.
Nada Tunnel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Red River Gorge has been designated a National Natural Landmark as well as a Scenic By-way.
