The State of the Union featured President Obama discussing how America can get it's economy back on track. The President recognized the freight and passenger rail system as part of that solution.
America is the nation that built the transcontinental railroad, brought electricity to rural communities, constructed the Interstate Highway System. The jobs created by these projects didnt just come from laying down track or pavement. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Arranging and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Minimizing expending and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". They came from businesses that opened near a towns new train station or the new off-ramp. - President Obama
AAR officials were pleased that Obama recognized the freight-rail industry's private investment $480 billion over the past 30 years "to make our national freight-rail network the envy of the world," said AAR CEO Edward Hamberger in a prepared statement.
"These private investments ensure freight rail can connect businesses to the global marketplace, thereby sustaining vital jobs all across the country, while providing the literal foundation for increased intercity passenger and high-speed rail," Hamberger said.
The freight rail industry, Hamberger added, also applauds President Obama's focus on "common sense regulation."
The President's plan for improving the infrastructure and rail network will still face challenges in the GOP controlled House. Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) released the following statement in response to the Presidents State of the Union address:
After the Administration derailed a major six-year transportation bill in 2009, it is encouraging that they are now on board with getting infrastructure projects and jobs moving again. However, just another proposal to spend more of the taxpayers money, when we have billions of dollars sitting idle tied up in government red tape, will never get our economic car out of the ditch.
Weve got to do more with less to improve our infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner.
Here's hoping that Congress and the President can get together to keep America's entire transportation network moving forward.
