Night Riding

If someone was to ask me what my favorite time to ride on the Harley is, I would have to tell them night time.

When you ride a motorcycle at night, it's almost like you are in a different world. Even though you may be riding down the same road as you normally do, everything seems different; more alive.

The night air is crisper; you can feel the temperature drop as you ride past hay fields that are being irrigated, and then get warmer as you pass a rock wall that has been soaking up the sun all day.

Silhouettes of the mountains stretch across a blanket of night sky. The stars shine brighter, and seem to be within reach. When the moon is at its fullest it lights up the roadway, to the point of almost not needing your headlight anymore.

You can also catch the scent of things that you may miss during the day (besides the odor of a near-miss with a skunk); the sweet heavy scent of the Russian Olive trees, the diesel smoke trailing from a freight train, cotton candy at the carnival, dinners being cooked at home and laundry in the dryer. Being able to differentiate these on your ride makes you feel a bit more connected to your surroundings.

There is something very adventurous about driving on through the night; the beam of your headlight cutting through the blackness. Driving along on the side roads, you feel like you are the only person out there, and that the road belongs to you. Typical destinations become more of an adventure, as you are ultimately outrunning your headlight. Night riding presents its own challenges and dangers, and is not for the faint of heart. But for those that are looking for a unique experience, it can be something of a novelty.

Get out there and enjoy the warm summer nights on your motorcycle...you will be in for a sensory treat!
