While the news of Googles new social networking site Google+ was announced some time ago, today it was Zuckerbergs turn on stage with the awesome news of Facebook and Skype teaming up to offer live video chat.
The new feature launched today as many tech-savvy people such as SoldierKnowsBest signed on to create YouTube videos trying out live chat.
Facebook and Skypes partnership comes in response to the upcoming Google+ feature to chat live over video with other people on the network. Controversy reigns over whose feature will win the popularity verdict.
But what does all this mean for you, the possible international traveler?
With the new feature available to Facebook users, you can call friends and family like you would on Skype, except now via the social network, and chat live from anywhere in the world with Internet access. And if the person youre calling isnt there, you can leave a voicemail on their account.
Undoubtedly, if Facebook hasnt allowed mobile phones the capacity to make calls, it will have to, and soon, if it plans to keep pace with the new giant coming out of the clouds.
Google+ will not only give users the opportunity to make single calls, it will allow them to talk with up to ten friends in real-time video.
So say you have recently returned to your hotel from a day on the beach in Barbados where you swam with sea turtles, but you dont want to share the same story with each friend on individual calls using your calling card. With Google+, as long as you have Internet access, you can share that story on live video chat with them only once.
Saves you time, and it saves you money.
The two hindrances are the access to Internet and the limitation of users. "The key to budget travel is to plan onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Access to Internet is not everywhere yet, much less for free. Thus, making that call over Facebook, Skype, or Google+ might have to be delayed until you make it to a coffee shop, your hostel, or your hotel.
Secondly, not everyones grandmother uses Facebook. Enough said.
In the end, while calling internationally has become cheaper over the years and the technology has become such that we dont have to use payphones with exorbitant charges, if an emergency rears its ugly head, sometimes you have to eat the cost and make the call you know will charge too much, but will definitely patch you through.
In any other event, though, there is no reason why you shouldnt jump on the bandwagon of free international calling and save your travel budget for swimming with those sea turtles.
