What started off as a simple haunted house for their daughters birthday party, has soon become a Halloween tradition for the city of Burbank. Every year the Meyers family of 907 California St. invites the entire neighborhood into their home to partake in their do-it-yourself haunted house, cleverly named Rotten Apple 907. Entrance is free, however donations are graciously accepted. Establishing itself as a non-profit event the Meyers family redistributes 100% of all donations to a local charity. This year the charity of choice is The Family Service Agency of Burbank which provides social services and counseling to the community.
The theme for the 2010 haunt is Nightmare at the Museum. Opening night is Sunday, October 24th and then again on Halloween weekend starting that Friday. All tours begin at 7pm.
Aside from being generous enough to open their home to complete strangers, the Meyers and their fellow volunteers are also kind enough to share the secrets of how they constructed the spookiness. On the Rotten Apple website there is a How to section with step-by-step instructions to creating a homemade haunted house. There are Frankenstein and alien templates, black light ghost tips, fake blood recipes, cemetery column and coffin cut-outs, flesh mix, scare tactics, and potions for slime all readily available at RottenApple907.com.
