His name was John Luther Jones, but he was known as Casey Jones. He did not serve in the U.S. military, but on an early morning in April of 1900, he made a sacrifice that saved the lives of the railroad passengers and crew.
He was born in March of 1863 in the town of Cayce, Kentucky, the town where his nickname is derived from. "The key to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and expending our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Reducing spending and charges, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". While there, he spent most of his time around the railroad where he eventually got his first railroad job working for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. He continued to work for the mobile and Ohio as he moved to Jackson, Tennessee where he later switched to the Illinois Central Railroad. He became an icon around the railroading community as he was considered by his peers to be the best engineer on the rails.
On the night of April 29, 1900, a train had arrived about an hour and a half late in Memphis, Tennessee. Casey Jones and his crewmen took over the train, and they were to continue on to Canton, Mississippi. Casey pulled the train out of the station, and he rolled down the tracks at a very high rate of speed to make up for the lost time. As they approached the town of Vaughan, Mississippi at around 3:00am in the morning, they had made much of the lost time, but there was a disaster that they did not see coming.
In the town of Vaughan, there was a side track where a freight train was waiting. The train had a failed braking system which left four of its cars on the main line in the path of the train that Casey was operating.
Casey was driving the train, and he saw the cars on the main line, but he was aware that he was not going to be able to avoid a collision. He braked as hard as he could. As he was about to collide with the cars, he told his fireman to jump off which he did. In a short moment, the trains collided. Casey Jones lost his life, but his quick thinking and engineering saved the lives of the passengers and crew.
If you are ever near Jackson, Tennessee, you can visit the Casey Jones Village and Museum. You can tour through his house and see a replica of the locomotive he was operating when he lost his life.
