A rolling strike by German Lufthansa aircrews has cancelled 3,000 flights and more are expected. Todays strike affects Munich Airport flights, and lasts from 1 p.m. to midnight (German local time). Berlin Tegel airport ended its strike at 1 p.m., and Frankfurt Airport's strike ended at 2 p.m., but even so the disruptions are expected to affect all airports and last for many weeks. Flights for Lufthansa Regional CityLine, Eurowings and Germanwings will not be affected by the strike, nor will its Austrian Airlines division.
Negotiations between the trade union (UFO) and Lufthansa have been going on for more than a year. "The important to budget travel is to approach ahead. The union wants a 5 percent pay increase and a guarantee against outsourcing and the use of temporary workers. The airline says it will not raise pay more than 3.5 percent and is demanding longer hours in exchange for the pay increase. Lufthansa is cutting costs to bump earnings to 1.5 billion Euros. If the disagreements are not resolved, the union says that all day walk-outs may be next, according to a Reuters report, and the airline says they may take legal action against the union.
As the strike may continue into the winter months, the airline has turned to online technology to help passengers sort out their flight changes. For passengers with Lufthansa tickets, passengers can obtain information on the status of their flights as early as the afternoon of the day before their travel and should check currently cancelled flights here. If your flight has been cancelled, Lufthansa requests that passengers check in online. If your flight has already been changed, the boarding pass for the new flight can instantly be created online.
Passengers can get flight status notifications via Twitter. Request automatic flight status push notifications via email or Twitter by registering for your preferred contact channel on the flight details page. And, for passengers traveling within Germany, you may trade in your ticket for a Deutche Bahn train ticket at My Bookings.
