Less than 24 hours after posting the first installment of this story, I received notice that my bank account had been compromised. And drained. The source of the transactions? Guatemala.
It's not that I'm not upsetI am. But I am also counting my lucky stars. How? Well, lucky star number one is that we noticed when we did. Number two is that this happened when we were at home. Number three is that all of the fraudulent transactions happened after we were back in the United States, so they can easily be proven. Number four is that I notified our bank of the dates of our trip, so that they have a record. Number five is that nothing worse happened and we suffered no physical harm.
One thing that hasn't changed is my opinion of Guatemala, and my enjoyment of the time I was able to spend there.
One thing that has changed is how I will approach ATMs. I'm all but 100 percent certain that my card was compromised on a night when all but one ATM in Panajachel were malfunctioning. We needed money to pay for our hotel the next day, when we were to leave. The situation seemed sketchy to us, but we went ahead anyway. What we should have done is explain the situation to the hotel owner and worked out another way to pay her (though she could not accept credit cards). It was a dumb mistake, but one that I won't soon forgettrust your gut.
