South Padre Island. Not having been there in several years, I finally found an opportunity to get down there for a visit. I also found that immediately following Spring Break is a nice quiet time to visit. This allows a more relaxed time and opportunity to enjoy many places without the under siege feel that comes with thousands of temporary inhabitants.

The smell of sea and salt air is always appealing to me having spent a good deal of time at sea on boats with names that started "USS". It also reminded me of times past when I actually worked on gulf coast shrimping boats. Feeling a bit nostalgic about my shrimping days, I set out to have a nice seafood lunch.

What I found was Dirty Al's. On first glance as I rode past, it had that particular curb appeal I was looking for. I was near the water, it was weathered and to me at least, looked a bit like a tavern. It also had "Bike Parking" painted on the front of it. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Organizing and expending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Curbing spending and charges, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel costs!..". Whether or not it meant bicycle or motorcycle didn't matter much to me.

The first thing I noticed upon going inside were the enormous shrimp on ice. Also, it was not a tavern, but you could get cold beer. It was adorned in the standard decor... a sort of combination of restaurant and bait & tackle shop. It also smelled like great seafood.

Quickly seated, the host suggested the shrimp. While perusing the menu and talking to the waiter, the shrimp was suggested a few more times. With the suggestion finally soaking in, I ordered the 9 piece shrimp and fish combo with a shrimp stuffed jalapeno appetizer.

The shrimp appetizer arrived and I was a bit surprised to find it was bigger than I imagined. Always a fan of stuffed or bacon wrapped jalapeno's, I was not expecting to see something the size of a large lemon or baked potato. Digging in to it, I found it had just enough spice and heat to tell your taste buds to wake up and pay attention. It was great. No one flavor overpowering the other instead working together for a great warm up to the coming meal.

My fried fish and shrimp basket arrived quickly and was also in good sized portions. Having chosen the combo I got five shrimp and four pieces of flounder atop a layer of fries. The fish was cooked perfectly and the shrimp were well seasoned and had great flavor. It was just what I was looking for. I'll have to make a point of listening to the waiter a bit more often. I will try to sample more of the menu my next visit but it will be hard to avoid having the shrimp again.

So, if you find yourself in South Padre with a craving for fried shrimp, I'd suggest Dirty Al's Seafood Restaurant. Prompt service, tasty food and reasonable prices. Don't forget the appetizer!
