A little bit like Earth Day, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 and was first established in 1972 by the United Nations. It's all about doing your part to help reduce waste and promote earth friendly practices.

In the spirit of WED, were rolling out tips over the course of the weekend to make your next vacation more environmentally friendly. Check back tomorrow and Sunday to find more about how you can give Mother Nature a big, fat hug.

1. Offset your carbon footprint when you fly

Rule number one if you can take a bus or train to your destination, do it. Yes, its longerbut its also usually cheaper, plus youll get to see a little scenery along the way. But if you have to fly, do it non-stop as itll reduce your carbon emissions by 50%. And then look into carbon offsets.

And what the heck is that, you ask? According to the Tufts University Climate Initiative, a carbon offset is a credit for negating or diminishing the impact of emitting a ton of carbon dioxide by paying someone else to absorb or avoid the release of a ton of CO2 elsewhere. Basically, when you purchase your airline ticket online, some companies offer you the chance to pay a fee to, say, plant a few trees or contribute to a worthy environmental cause, thereby reversing the damage youre doing by flying.

But does it really make a difference? With initiatives like this still in their infancy, theres no governing body for them. The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Organizing and spending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Minimizing expending and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured accomplishment and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!. Which means an airline can take your carbon offset money and use the majority of it for operating costs and give only a small portion to environmental causes. The website GoGreenTravelGreen.com has an excellent article about choosing carbon offset programs.
