The French civil aviation authority has asked airlines to cancel flights into French airports Tuesday by up to 50% because of possible personnel strikes. France is currently experiencing a wave of protests by a populace unhappy with the government's effort to raise the retirement age to 62. Blockades and strikes at refineries have already led to fuel shortages. Airlines are being advised to carry enough fuel for their return journeys while gas stations are experiencing long lines of motorists trying to fill up their tanks before the situation gets even worse. Cancelations of high-speed trains, carrying thousands of commuters and travelers, are likely to increase as the government shows no sign of compromise with a populace still sympathetic to the unions' cause.

Added to France's woes is a report from Saudi intelligence officials that a branch of Al Qaeda in Yemen is currently planning an attack in Europe, with France being a notable target.

In light of the strikes and terrorism plots in the news lately, budget travelers may be wondering whether they should spring for travel insurance when purchasing their next vacation.

Purchasing travel insurance is always a good idea when you can't afford to lose the cost of the trip. Traveling families and seniors should definitely consider purchasing travel insurance as the basic policies, the rates for which are quite reasonable, will provide reimbursement if a trip is canceled because a traveling member falls ill. Keep in mind that many credit cards already provide their cardholders with basic trip cancellation and interruption insurance when the trip is charged on their card, so check with your credit card company first.

Many travel providers and online agencies provide the option to add on travel insurance during the booking process. You can purchase travel insurance separately, anytime before your trip, from companies such as Access America, InsureMyTrip and Travel Guard. SquareMouth offers a comprehensive tool to help you compare and choose the best travel insurance policy for your trip across all the major travel insurance companies. Read the fine print to see whether you would be covered in the event of a strike or terrorist attack.

Under Access America's Basic, Classic Comprehensive, and Deluxe Comprehensive plans, coverage is provided if a terrorist attack happens at your foreign destination within 30 days of your scheduled arrival. For strikes, there must be a complete cessation of services for either 12 or 24 hours, depending on the policy purchased. Customers who purchase a plan providing such coverage will get reimbursement so long as it was purchased before the union voted to go on strike. For two travelers aged 30 who purchased a $3590.24 nonrefundable vacation to Munich from San Francisco on Expedia, Access America quoted $114 for basic coverage for both travelers - a small price to pay for added protection and peace of mind.
