Here are my favorite places to eat in New York City:

5) Good Enough to Eat Wake up early in New York and take a walk on the Upper West side and catch breakfast at this wonderful, crowded little Vermont-style cafe. On weekends you'll find a line most of the morning, so get there before you're starving. My favorite: The Gramercy Omelette with Granny Smith apple slices and Vermont sharp white cheddar. Even better, it comes with a buttermilk biscuit with strawberry butter. Add a fresh-squeezed orange juice or a cup of hot coffee and you're all set for a day of site-seeing.

4) Gray's Papaya After your big breakfast, amble around Central Park and then head for a quick, cheap, lunch at Gray's Papaya on Broadway and West 72nd St. A hot dog will cost you $1.50.

3) Rice You never knew there were this many varieties of rice but this little hole in the wall serves up black, brown, white, red, green and sticky rice blending a variety of cultural foods in a tasty package. I've been to the NoLita location but since my last visit Rice has expanded to other locations. Entrees come in both small and large sizes and you can eat here for less than $10.

2) Veselka is a little Ukrainian restaurant in East Village. Waitresses move at 100 mph and this restaurant is never quiet. I once ate a table next to Julianne Moore and her husband Bart Freundlich and their two children. I'm a fan of breakfasts where your beverage of choice is included with your meal and you can find lots of choices for less than $10. My favorite: challah french toast.

1) Cucina di Pesce is my favorite restaurant. Which is unfortunate since I live in Seattle. I wouldn't think of a visit to New York City without eating here. In the years I've been going here, I've seen the same wait staff and had the same incredible service and great food in a romantic and charming atmosphere time after time. My favorite is the Early Bird (served between 4 and 6:30pm daily) prix fixe meal for $12.95. That gets you soup, salad, bread, an entree, and a glass of wine (or other beverage). I took my vegan mother here one year and she asked if the soup had any meat. It did. So she politely refused it. Ten minutes later the waiter returned with a vegan soup that the chef had made especially for her.

There are lots of really wonderful places to eat in New York City and enough competition to keep prices relatively low. If you want to get great meals for lower prices be comfortable eating away from the main tourist areas. But since everything in New York is well-connected, it isn't hard.
