Don't ever make the mistake of attempting to ski for the first time without proper instruction. Falling down a hill with skis and struggling to get up is enough to turn a novice off the sport. As part of Learn to Ski and Board weekend, six ski resorts in North Lake Tahoe will be offering beginner's lesson packages for $25 on December 11 and December 12. For just $25, beginners will get a beginner's lift ticket (access to beginner's slopes only), group instruction, and rental equipment. Learn to ski properly for the price of lunch.
The six participating ski resorts are Alpine Meadows, Boreal Mountain Resort, Granlibakken, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA and Sugar Bowl. Considering that Squaw Valley USA's First Time Adventure Package usually costs $125, this is a huge discount that makes a ski weekend affordable for beginners. Check with each individual resort for minimum age requirements (usually 13 years). While reservations are not required, early arrival at the ski resort to purchase the lesson package and reserve a spot is encouraged.
For those not able to make it out to Tahoe that weekend, the ski resorts offer discounted beginner's packages on other dates as well. Northstar-at-Tahoe offers the beginner's package for $49 from November 28 through December 17. For $35, you can learn to ski at Squaw Valley USA on January 9, February 6, and March 6, 2011.
After a day on the slopes, retreat to a room at Ferrari's Crown Resort. While the family-run Ferrari's Crown Resort doesn't offer luxury accommodations in a resort setting with a spa or exercise facility, it does offer clean and simple rooms in a lake-front setting. Walk out of your room to Ferrari's private beach and soak in views of Lake Tahoe and the mountains. For check-in December 11 and check-out December 13, a regular king bed room was $148 for the two nights not including tax. A simple breakfast and hi-speed internet access are included. Throw in lake-front hot tubs and heated swimming pools and you'll be hard-pressed to find a comparable property close to the ski resorts for such a low price.
As an added bonus, Ferrari's Crown Resort sells discounted lift tickets for the second day of skiing on more advanced slopes, which hopefully you'll be able to tackle without any falls at all.
The North Lake Tahoe ski resorts and Ferrari's Crown Resort are about a 3 1/2 hour - 4 hours drive from San Francisco.
