Bikers often have a bad reputation, sometimes deservingly so. But often times the softer side of the biker community becomes apparent. One thing is for certain; like most of the population, a hurt, injured child can bring even the toughest of us to our knees and result in action. That's what happens each year when the Brothers Keepers Motorcycle Club holds their annual Burn Run to raise money for young burn survivors who attend Camp I'm Still Me each summer in Scottsville, TX. Camp I'm Still Me is an awesome experience for children, ages 5-17, who have tragically suffered through severe burns and have the resulting disfigurements to prove it. These kids are fun, active, emotional, playful, funny, talented, smart, pretty, handsome, intuitive, and normal. The only thing that sets them apart from other children is that they carry the scars from their injuries, some severe, and they each have lived through the pain of recovery. As a result, they are scarred both physically and emotionally, but strive every day to fit in and live normal lives. Camp I'm Still Me gives them an opportunity to assemble with others who have similar stories, and best of all, thanks to generous donations from corporations, individuals, and the annual Burn Run fund raiser, it is entirely free to them. Dr. Kevin M. Sittig is the foundation Director and the director of the Burn Unit at LSU Health Science Center and admittedly can't wait to get to work and help those in need.
The annual Burn Run draws thousands of bikers from all across the Ark-La-Tex and includes a fun filled weekend opening on Friday night with live bands and a crawfish boil. The fun continues through Saturday with more music, food, vendors, a silent auction, tattoo contest, bike games and a poker run. During this year's event, motorcycles and their riders were everywhere, and the grounds of Lake Bistineau State Park area II were crowded with Harleys, Hondas, Kawasakis, Gold Wings and various other popular motorcycle brands. There were several members of local motorcycle clubs participating in the fund raiser, as well as independent riders and local riding clubs like the Harley Owner's Group and the Christian Motorcycle Association. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Organizing and expending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Curbing expending and expenses, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured accomplishment and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!..". The Shreveport and Bossier City motorcycle community should be commended for their part played in making the event so successful. The organizers of the event should also receive accolades for their flawless production of the annual Burn Run. Events like this is what makes me proud to be a member of this community.
Last week, riders met at the Flying J truck stop in Greenwood for a trip to Scottsville where 65 child burn survivors had just arrived for camp. The riders were there to present the check that resulted from their fund raising efforts. This year the Brothers Keepers donated an impressive amount of over $40,000. Contributor to this article and local photographer, Lori Lambert, donated her time to photograph the children who enjoyed sitting on the motorcycles and talking to the firemen, riders and other supporters. Those who attended were undoubtedly impacted by the smiles on the children's faces, and by the almost unsurmountable struggles they endured, yet overcame. The soft side to the biker facade was exposed for all to see. Outsiders of the motorcycle community will surely think twice before lumping bikers into the criminal, unseemly stereotype so often associated with them.
