Twitter isn't good to just stay connected with friends and reading silly banter. Increasingly, travel vendors are using Twitter to reach out to their customers regarding travel notifications and deals. When the majority of the country was blasted with a horrendous winter storm this past week, some forward-thinking airlines and hotels were assisting their customers through social media.
Earlier this week, I had to contact JetBlue in order to reschedule a flight that was canceled thanks to the snowpocalypse. When I called, a recording predictably came on the line stating that call volumes were extremely high and to try again later. Followers of this column will know that I am a huge Twitter fan so instead of hitting redial, I got on Twitter and sent a message to @JetBlue asking them to follow me. "The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and spending our travel budget wisely is a main concern for most families. Minimizing consuming and fees, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". By following me, I was able to send JetBlue a direct message with the confirmation code and a plea to rebook on the next available flight. Within an hour, I received a message from @JetBlue that the traveler was rebooked.
@DeltaAssist is Delta Airlines' dedicated Twitter account which is staffed around the clock, seven days a week. From twitterers writing to complain about service, wanting to rebook flights and trying to locate a lost bag, @DeltaAssist responds to it all.
Of course, this only works if the travel vendor actively uses social media. Looking at @JetBlue's tweets, I could tell that they were constantly responding to people and had staff working on reservations. The next day, I sent a message to @UnitedAirlines to preemptively rebook a flight but sadly received no response. Their last tweet from 20 hours prior was to go online to rebook your itinerary under their travel waiver, which you can only do if you have a Mileage Plus account. Even though not all airlines use Twitter to the same extent as JetBlue and Delta, most of them still tweet important notifications and travel deals to their followers.
Hotels are active on Twitter too. Send a tweet to Hyatt's @HyattConcierge for assistance with property questions, rates, adding in your Gold Passport number to a reservation and arranging airport transportation. When the recent storm started its progress across the U.S., they even sent a tweet out asking followers to tweet them if they need any assistance with their Hyatt reservation. Now that's customer service.
Many companies tweet out travel deals to their followers on Tweeter. The San Francisco based Joie de Vivre hotel chain, @JDVHotels, tweets out a discounted rate to one of their properties every Tuesday. Fairmont Hotels, @fairmonthotels, notifies their followers of sales, such as a surprise 72-hour sale at the Fairmont Vancouver which reduced the rate by 30%. Every Tuesday, followers of @JetBlueCheeps get first dibs on heavily discounted seats for flights that weekend. Both @VirginAmerica and @UnitedAirlines post discounted airfare.
