Taking it early: making your family vacation more affordable this year

It's a tough year to afford a family vacation. But specials abound for the family willing to break tradition and go in the spring instead of the summer. May is a cheaper month to travel, has less crowds at popular vacation spots, and offers milder weather.

For families with school age children, this can be a tougher call. But consider this: Make it educational and talk to teachers about helping them keep up with homework and having them write a special report on what they learned.

My top choice: Williamsburg, Virginia A week in Williamsburg will do a lot toward the education of your children in early American history. Not far away is Jamestown, packed with all the history of the USA's first European settlement. Busch Gardens will give you all the thrills of a theme park while letting you avoid Mickey Mouse this year. And nearby Virginia Beach is a fun place to frolic in the Atlantic waves. In May, you can stay in a 1-bedroom resort in Williamsburg for as little as $265 for the whole week (that's about $38/night). Southwest flies in and out of Norfolk, about an hour's drive from Williamsburg.

Other great family destinations to enjoy an educational vacation in May and early June include Boston/New England and Washington D.C. Don't skip the vacation. With a little flexibility and creativity you can enjoy it so much more.
