Ilikai Hotel, one of Waikikis famous beachfront hotels, opened as a luxury high-rise in 1964. It was built by Mr. Chinn Ho, a Hawaii-born self-made millionaire, when he raised $27 million to create his dream hotel - The Ilikai (Hawaiian for surface of the sea).
The Ilikai was the first beachfront hotel to open in nearly 10 years since Henry J. Kaiser opened his Kaiser Hawaiian Village (now Hilton) and Roy Kelley opened the Reef (now Outrigger) in 1955. It had a whopping 1,050 rooms and condo units. Besides being billed as Waikikis first luxury high-rise hotel, the Ilikai claims another first ... it was the first hotel with a glass elevator.
In 1968, Steve McGarrett and Hawaii 5-O raised the profile of the hotel even further when the Ilikai was featured in the series opening sequence. People saw McGarrett standing on the hotel balcony every week.
