Damaged hotels in Haiti - information and reports

At least two hotels in Haiti have been reported by various sources to have "collapsed" in the 7.0 earthquake which struck around 5pm local time Tuesday,January 12th. However, the actual extent of the damage is not yet clear; more will be known later in the morning.

The two hotels which are alleged to have suffered severe damage are the Hotel Christopher and the landmark Hotel Montana; another "small" hotel is said tohave collapsed but it isn't clear if that report actually refers to the Montana or the Christopher.Friends and relatives of guests at the Montana there are posting on a Facebook page for the Hotel Montana. At least one report seems to indicate that the Hotel Montana survived the initial quake and that a portion of it then collapsed in an aftershock, raising hopes for survivors who may have fled after the first strong jolt. While communications are still spotty, some people are having success in getting text messages through even when cell phone calls fail.

Additional information on the Hotel Christopher, which has served recentlyas the U.N. Mission headquarters,is not clear at this time. It is being reported that the U.N.
