Boredom is pretty much impossible in New York City.

The challenge is really to pack in all you want to do before time and money run out.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in New York:

  • Visit the Modern Museum of Art (MoMA). Admission every other Friday between 4:00 and 8:00pm is free. And children 16 and under are free all the time. Regular Admission: $20. If you are trying to save money, stay out of the gift shop. It is a tempting place to drop a lot of money.
  • Tour the United Nations building. Arrive early for a ticketed time sometime in the day Monday-Friday between 9:45am and 4:45pm. Tickets are $12.50 for adults; $6.50 for children (5-12) and $8.00 for students with ID.
  • Enjoy the Metropolitan Museum of Art for what you can afford. The Met is technically a "suggested admission" museum but you will get some serious looks if you try to pay nothing at all. "Suggested admission" is $20 for adults.
  • Stand in line for Shakespeare in the Park tickets. If you visit New York in the summer, this is one not to be missed. Known for attracting great actors such as Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, the only downside is a possible summer thunderstorm. Admission is free to this outdoor venue in Central Park but tickets go quickly so get to the line well before the 1pm distribution time.
  • If you want to see a Broadway show, check out a TKTS Discount Booth that sells tickets discounted up to 50% on the day of the performance. If you're willing to sit alone, another good strategy is walking up to the box office five minutes before show time and seeing if they have a cheap single ticket.
  • One of my favorite things to do is people watch in Central Park. Sit at Bethesda Fountain and count how many weddings are going on, take a tour of the Bridges of Central Park, watch games on the Great Lawn or relax at Belvedere Castle.
  • FInally, check out the New York City Pass. For $79 ($59 for kids), this pass gives you access to four museums (The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim, and American Museum of Natural History) as well as The Empire State Observatory, and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. That's nearly half off the combined admission for all these things.
