HISTORY
The boutique chic Hotel Allegro is housed on the site of the Bismarck Hotel which first opened in 1894. After the original building was razed and rebuilt to make room for the Palace Theatre next door, the new Art Deco-influenced Bismarck reopened in 1926.
When the Bismarck closed in 1996, Kimpton Hotels bought the property and renovated it, keeping the Art Deco style intact. In March of 1998, the hotel officially reopened as the four-star Hotel Allegro, Kimptons first Chicago location. Just last year, the hotel underwent a $40 million renovation to bring the latest technology to guestrooms while still maintaining reverence for the hotels historic past.
LOCATION
Located at 171 W. Randolph, Hotel Allegro sits at the intersection of Randolph and Wells Streets in Chicagos Loop. Public transit-friendly travelers will find the Washington & Wells El train (brown, purple, orange and pink lines) just a block away. There are several parking lots in the area, but travelers with cars who plan on using them frequently during their stay should stick with the $45 in-and-out valet. If you dont plan on using your car much (and really, you dont need to when youre downtown Chicago), park in the Millennium Park or Grant Park North garage (by far the cheapest garage options) and cab it to the hotel.
DETAILS
Allegro boasts 483 guest rooms, including 31 suites, 61 double-doubles, 71 queen bed rooms and 320 king bed rooms. Make no mistake these rooms are small, but theyre also charming, plush and good use is made of the space. The dcor is a mix of the hotels Art Deco roots with contemporary touches. Blue and silver toned rooms accent furniture made of macassar ebony. A retro wallpapered bathroom is topped off with cute double doors.

In addition to the basics youd expect from a four-star hotel, Hotel Allegro hosts a complimentary wine hour for guests every evening in the lobby from 5-6 p.m. The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. Plus, theres free internet access, complimentary on-demand in-room yoga, an impressively stocked mini-bar with several organic options and an Italian restaurant (312 Chicago) and a bar (Encore Liquid Lounge), both onsite. Environmentally-conscious travelers (which really, shouldnt we all be?) will love the fact that Hotel Allegro was one of the first five hotels in Illinois to receive the Green Seal Silver certification. SPECIALS
Through Sept. 7, 2009, Hotel Allegro offers the Summer Playground Package. For just $30 more than the best available rate, guests receive a $25 gift certificate to the hotel restaurant, an in-room movie with popcorn, sangria during the hotels wine hour and even ice cream pops in the afternoon in the hotel lobby.
Guests can also add $1 to the best available rate to get either a cocktail (for up to two room occupants per day) or a continental breakfast. Not applicable with senior, AAA or group rates.

THE VERDICT
Absolutely recommended! Hotel Allegro is a good fit for single or couple travelers due to the cozy room size (although its important to note that family suites are available). The overall feel and atmosphere of the hotel eclectic, quaint, and unique makes for a memorable stay. Definitely not a cookie-cutter chain.
