Fireworks, picnics and barbeques are all popular events on Independence Day. Instead of going about your usual routine this year, try a new, exciting activity. Begin a new tradition with your significant other or your family. Try to kayak on the Chicago River, take a cruise on Lake Michigan, or attend a beer and horseshoe tournament in Wicker Park. Here are some tips, events and ideas for you Chicago folks who need some planning advice for this holiday. "The key to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Arranging and expending our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and expenses, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind saving money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". After all, you will want to enjoy the day off of work.
While this is on the more expensive side, this Kayak Tour is supposed to be incredibly fun. It's $65 a person to paddle along the Chicago River and view the awesome Navy Pier fireworks. If you are just learning to kayak, adventure out with a friend. You will paddle from North Avenue to downtown. It can be a great activity, especially if you paddle with a friend.
Check out museums, boat rides and a plethora of other activities, too, including the Grant Park Music Festival. The concert, conducted by Christopher Bell, is at 6:30 pm on the Fourth. You can also take a cruise off of Navy Pier on the Seadog or with Wendella Boats. The Seadog offers a fun, water-splashing speed cruise at 9:00 pm, and Wendella has a 7:30 pm tour of the river and the fireworks. Or, treat yourself to dinner and fireworks on an entertainment cruise; some of these fancy events take place on yachts. If you are an out-of-towner spending your Fourth of July in Chicago, try something new, and learn some Chicago history along the beautiful skyline.
You can also learn about Chicago's history for free at the Chicago History Museum's 53rd annual Fourth of July celebration. Listen to patriotic musical performances, a reading of the Declaration of Independence and more. The event takes place from 10 am to 12 pm.
If a cold beer, or several, sounds like your cup of tea, then be sure to check out Chicago's Fourth of July Pub Crawl. Instead of going to see fireworks, party it up with friends, co-workers, and even family members. Crawl your way through Chicago's best bars, and grab some thick, juicy and saucy Chicago-style pizza along the way.
Pub crawls will definitely be hard to do with young kids. Parades and family cruises are commonplace in the Chicago area. Be sure to check out suburban parades, as many have their own on the morning of the Fourth.
Every holiday is always more fun when you spend time with your friends and family. Pick someone's house, and have a potluck. It's cheap, easy and will definitely be relaxing. The beach is another fun place to spend the holiday, especially if the 90 degree temperatures don't go away. Make sure to stay hydrated, though, if you do decide to spend the day outside.
Try to relax this holiday, and spend the Fourth doing one of these fun activities. Begin a new, exciting tradition this year with one (ore more) of these last-minute ideas!
