A favorite autumn activity is the trips to view fall color. While a car trip may be the norm for some, motorcyclists know the best way to fully enjoy the entire experience of fall color is to take that trip on a motorcycle.
For the third year, The Weather Channel has listed the best drives to view fall color. While not specifically designated as motorcycle roads by The Weather Channel, those of us who ride know that these trips are all great motorcycle trips.
Below are the fall drives determined as best by fans of The Weather Channels Facebook page.
The southern section of the Blue Ridge Parkway was once again voted as one of the best roads for fall color. "The important to budget travel is to plan in front. The Weather Channel accounts accessibility to many states and within moderate driving distance to large population centers in the eastern United States for the Blue Ridge Parkways continued popularity.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Scenic Byway. The parkway is, essentially, a road that was created for its gorgeous views. The turn-outs along the parkway make perfect vistas from which to view fall colors.
In the west, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado was voted a favorite by Facebook fans of The Weather Channel. Peak fall color usually occurs in late September and early October and this year the Aspens turned the mountains golden right on schedule.
A ride along Trail Ridge Road will take the biker to an elevation of about 12,000 and above the tree line but also a great vantage point for viewing the mountains and the foliage. The road has several switchbacks so it is indeed a bikers road.
In New England, when one thinks fall color, one thinks Vermont. The color starts early in the Green Mountain state but lasts well into October.
The Vermont Department of Tourism reports the state has had plenty of moisture which will make for a stellar fall color season.
Just about any road other than the interstate highways will make for a colorful drive through Vermont. With quaint villages, mountain roads, lakes, and college towns, this state is prime for laid-back riding.
Staying in the northeast part of the nation, The Weather Channel suggests catching the fall color in the Catskill Mountains of New York. With nearly 100 mountain peaks and only a few hours from New York City, the Catskills is a prime spot for leaf peeping.
The area just west of I-87 will offer bikers plenty of back country riding, lakes, fishing villages, and, of course, beautiful trees.
With 19 million acres of woods, finding just ONE road in Michigan from which to view leaves is the challenge. The fans of The Weather Channel voted US-23 along the shores of Lake Huron as a favorite road.
This area of Michigan is also called the Sunrise Side and US-23 is also known as the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway. For more than 200 miles, the road follows the Lake Huron coastline, offering gorgeous views of the water to the east and the fall color on the west.
From Bay City to the Mackinac Bridge, US-23 is indeed a scenic drive. The area is a bit under populated so for motorcyclists this might mean planning ahead for gas and eat stops.
Regardless of where one lives in the United States, nearby are great motorcycle roads and glorious fall color.
