Joggers. That's the first thing that catches your attention when walking Baltimore Waterfront Promenade: men and women in their 20's to 40's, lots of them, jogging around the harbor. It brings to mind something that we have been hearing over and over, that Baltimore is increasingly becoming a residential city for young professionals.

Yes, yuppies.

And what better place to jog or walk? The Baltimore Waterfront Promenade is 7-plus mile paved path along some of the nicest scenery in Charm City. It stretches from Canton Waterfront Park on the East side to Fort McHenry on the West. Along the way it passes by the iconic neighborhoods of Canton, Fells Point, Harbor East, Little Italy, Inner Harbor, Key Highway, Federal Hill, and Locust Point.

Start your walk with free parking in Canton Waterfront Park. The first of several restaurants with outdoor dining is just ahead. And how great is that? Walkers get to enjoy the ambiance and aroma of a good restaurants, while diners get views of the water and great people-watching.

It's a win-win.

Continue along the Canton waterfront and see the first of many marinas with many large, shiny vessels. Look the other way and see lovely waterfront condominiums, some for sale. Are there enough zeroes on your bank balance? Continue on to Fells Point and its many opportunities for refreshment and sustenance. As you pass the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum, be on the lookout for an outdoor wedding ceremony. In just a few trips I have happened upon several.

Here the path diverts inland a block as you avoid the vacant lot formerly occupied by the chrome processing plant. I hear there is a proposal for a mixed use residential-commercial development on this site. As you reach Harbor East glance right and see the frozen flame of the Katyn Forest Monument. Next find an abandoned party-block nightclub. Apparently, someone's dream did not pan out. I wonder if there's a proposal for that property.

A little further brings you past the Pier 6 Concert Pavilion and then the Pier 5 hotel and restaurants and another outdoor wedding venue. The National Aquarium, the World Trade Center and Harborplace are next. "The key to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and spending our travel budget properly is a main concern for most families. Minimizing spending and costs, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!..". Here you are likely to encounter the largest crowds. Few traverse the whole waterfront promenade, but everyone visits the Inner Harbor.

Continuing on you walk past Federal Hill and the Science Center. Pass by the new multi-million dollar waterfront development, and then - bonus - the path diverts away from the water and right through the heart of it. At the 4-plus mile mark stop and have a snack from a waterfront restaurant.

Now, time for a decision. Continue walking the inland route through Locust Point to Fort McHenry? Take a convenient water taxi back to Canton? Turn around and walk back the way you came? There is no wrong answer. At four miles I am half-exercised, half wind-blown, and half sun-exposed. I am walking back.

If you go, plan for weather. You may want sunscreen, sunglasses, a windbreaker and a camera. And of course, someone special.
