Baggage fees, seat selection fees, and priority boarding fees are just some of the fees to face the consumer. Airline profits are rising again and one contributing factor is the collection of fees. A group even proclaimed Thursday Mad as Hell Day and asked the public to sign their petition asking the government to require that airlines post the fees clearly on their sites and all other booking channels before the consumer purchases the ticket. MadAsHellAboutHiddenFees.com isnt just some manifestation of a few disgruntled fliers with chips on their shoulders, but is an initiative between the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Consumer Travel Alliance (CTA), and the Business Travel Coalition (BTC). It remains to be seen whether the Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, will take up the initiative's cause.

The one that seems to rile people up the most is the baggage fee. Southwest is the only domestic carrier to not charge baggage fees even for the second checked bag. Airfarewatchdog.com posts baggage fees for domestic travel here (remember that fees may change). You can find the airlines baggage fees on their websites pretty easily. True, its not part of the displayed fare or may even be shown throughout the booking process but you can find it if you want. Most offer a smaller charge for prepaying for your bag during the booking process so its not even a surprise.

While there are some situations where a flier needs to bring more, there shouldnt be any reason why an average person without children going on a two week vacation cant fit everything in a carryon. Pack for that vacation wisely to avoid baggage fees. If youve decided to purchase a really cheap ticket on an airline such as Spirit which charges to even bring on a carry on, then I'm afraid thats just the price to pay for buying such a cheap ticket.

Watch my slideshow to see how I would pack for a two week to month vacation in a location with varying weather conditions such as San Francisco. My possessions include: one pair of sneakers (which I'm wearing on the plane), one pair of black sandals, black skirt, black pants, two pairs of jeans, a hooded sweatshirt jacket, two cardigans, three sweaters, three t-shirts, two tank tops, two camisoles, a bag full of underwear, pajamas, a scarf, a toiletry bag, and a jewelry bag.

For those looking to pack really light, such as backpackers going on the road for months, ExOfficio is advertising their Give-N-Go underwear with the pitch that you can bring one piece (or two) to last you six weeks. Of course, you have to wash it nightly, so whats so special about this underwear? It's super quick-drying and is treated with Aegis Microbe Shield which controls odor-causing bacteria. The reviews on the site have been good. I wonder what happened after the 6th week test. Did the elastic band just start giving out or did the tester start noticing a certain unpleasant smell? Would you wear just one piece of underwear for six weeks of travel? Let me know if you have any opinions on this product or anything else offered by ExOfficio. Anything that helps to reduce the pack list is certainly worth checking out in my book.
