You most assuredly hear tips all the time from websites like Tripadvisor, Travelzoo, Sherman's Travel and others on when to buy airplane tickets. Each tip slightly differs, but is somewhere along the lines of 'buy on a Tuesday and leave on a Tuesday' or 'buy no more than three months in advance, but no less than six weeks to ensure the best price'. These tips may be helpful sometimes, but there's one time you never hear tips about: the holidays.
I'm sure when you hear holidays, you think of Thanksgiving and Christmas and just how much airplane ticket prices increase around the most wonderful time of the year. You are correct in thinking this, too. What I'm referring to though, is the fact that many airlines offer deals on or around holidays. "The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Planning and spending our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Curbing consuming and prices, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain accomplishment and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!..". For instance, if you want to travel on Labor Day, check if any airlines are offering a special Fourth of July sale on airfare. You can save big time booking near Independence Day rather than being forced to wait for last minute Labor Day deals popping up the week before. And, chances are that not too many people are going to be searching for airfare for Labor Day weekend around the Fourth of July, so tickets will most likely not sell out quickly if there is a deal.
This doesn't apply to only major holidays such as Christmas and our Indepenence Day. I say this from experience. I just returned from Europe, flying from Los Angeles to Dublin paying less than 70% of the cost the next lowest normal price for roundtrip airfare. I found a deal through Aer Lingus during the week of St. Patrick's Day where the company slashed prices all the way through the expensive summer months, and I pounced on the sale. I paid $750 for a roundtrip ticket, while the next lowest price I found through a travel site search engine was $1100. By breaking the general rule of 'don't book too far in advance', I got the best price. I also had plenty of dates to choose from. Due to the fact that my travel dates were so far in advance and most people simply did not bother to check if there would be sale occurring for any airlines celebrating St. Patrick's Day, I had no apprehensions that these tickets may sell out.
As you can see above, it would make sense that an Irish airline would offer a sale celebrating St. Patrick. Look for clues such as this. For instance, if you want to travel to Philadelphia, they may offer the best deals around the Fourth of July to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in their city. Or, going along with St. Patrick's Day, there may be special travel deals to Boston during the week of St. Patrick's Day. If a place is famous for a holiday or celebration or, then airlines may use it to their advantage to attract business. All you simply need to do is pay attention and be prepared to buy. Because as you know, sales are a temporary thing.
So, if you have plans to travel for Christmas, check if there are any airlines offering Halloween sales. Or, if you wish to travel for Easter, check near New Years Day or even President's Day or Valentine's Day. The savvy buyer looks where no one else does and you now you have a little more knowhow on how to do so.
