Walt Disney World is a major tourist destination and a hot spot for people looking for budget travel tips. If you're staying at an on-site hotel, you can take the free Magical Express bus to and from the airport and rely on internal transportation to the Disney parks, with no rental car needed.
Should you get a car anyway, even if you're staying at a Disney-owned hotel? What about if you're off-site at a hotel that has its own transportation to the attractions? Here are car rental considerations:
- Some hotels in the Orlando attractions area charge for parking. If they offer a theme park shuttle, you might be better off skipping the car and taking a paid shuttle to and from the airport.
- The Walt Disney World theme parks charge for parking, so if you drive from an off-site hotel, be prepared to pay. If you're staying at a Disney-owned hotel, the parking fee is waived.
- If you're staying at Walt Disney World but visiting other theme parks, like Universal Studios Florida, Legoland Florida, or SeaWorld Orlando, you'll have to pay for a shuttle if you don't have a car. If you do drive, be prepared to pay for parking.
- You might save some money on your food bill if you rent a car. You'll find virtually every fast food restaurant and budget eatery you can name within minutes of Disney property. Look in racks at hotels and restaurants for coupon books that have coupons for many of those eateries.
- Don't buy gas near Orlando International Airport without checking the price first. Rental car companies require you to return your vehicle with a full tank. There are certain gas stations near the airport that are notorious for charging almost twice the going rate per gallon of gas. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in advance. If you fuel up at a reasonably priced station near the theme parks, your gauge should still show '"full" when you get to the airport unless you're driving a real gas guzzler.
