Giant Sequoia's. Coastal Redwoods. The world's biggest and tallest trees. Trees that live thousands of years and grow to such immense size they can only truly be appreciated in person. There must be something special in the western Sierra Nevada's range to allow them to achieve such size and stature.

Having seen old pictures of them from assorted magazines I did a bit of research on the internet and decided I would need to see them in person. Wanting to avoid traffic in California almost always means avoiding California altogether but I skipped the coastal highways and ran a straightline up CA-99 through some wine country until reaching Sacramento and switching to I-5 until reaching Williams. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Arranging and consuming our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Lowering consuming and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". For those having never ridden across Hwy 20, it's a worthwhile piece of clean highway with plenty of winding hills and curves to put your bike through it's paces. A few miles north of the town of Ukiah we made one more road change to Hwy 101 the Redwood Highway.

Near Myers Flat we switched to old Hwy 101, now officially CA-254, but better known as the Avenue of Giants. If you have never been to this area, all I could really tell you about it is this... go see it in person. Absolutely fantastic scenery with the forests, a river that parallels the highway and for us clear sunny skies and 75 degrees. It simply couldn't have worked out any better.

There are many places to stop and soak in the scenery, get a bite to eat or even do some shopping. Once on the Avenue the scenery changed back and forth between bright open spaces to darker, densely forested areas that had cars using their headlights in the middle of the afternoon. Big trees, giant trees and enormous trees were the order of the day here and it was probably the most spectacular riding area I have ever seen. Bold words, but as of this writing I have ridden in or through no less than 35 states across the US. Having lived in southern California for better than 10 years, I had a hard time convincing myself I was still in California because the contrast is so stark.

If you are looking for a place to enjoy some of the best of what Mother Nature has to offer, the Avenue of Giants and the Redwoods are a sure thing. Do remember that certain times of year motorcyclists will find the area and roads unattainable due to weather. I recommend late spring like the end of April or early May. For me they are only a short 2,000 mile ride from home and will be worth the trip every time I make it.
