Do you feel like you gained ten pounds during Thanksgiving, with still more holiday dinners on the horizon? Are you heating costs too high leaving you needing a way to warm up? Are you just looking to challenge yourself?
No matter the reason, the Jersey shore has plenty of race options for those looking to run during this winter season.
For those who can't wait until 2012 to participate in an organized race, fret not. Asbury Park's Polar Bear Races will be held on New Year's Eve races this year. They begin with a 10-mile walk at 10 am, followed by a five-mile run at 1 pm. Both end with an optional dip in the ocean, perfect to cool off so dramatically that you will probably want to run it again just to warm up. The three-mile Twilight Run begins at 5:30 pm on the Asbury Park boardwalk and ends with a party at Porta Pizza in Asbury Park. The $35 entrance fee includes a shirt, one hour of an open bar and a dinner buffet. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. On February 18, at 11 am, the Manasquan Mid-Winter Beach Race takes place with all proceeds going toward the Manasquan First Aid Squad. Registration costs $30 before January 15, $35 until February 17 and $38 on race day.
Closing out the winter running season on February 26 is the Johnny Mac House of Spirits "Train-ing" Run. Participants will catch the 10:58 am train from Asbury Park train station, commute to either Bradley Beach, Belmar or Spring Lake (2, 4 and 6 miles respectively), disembark the train and run along the boardwalks back to Johnny Mac's for the post-run party, complete with pizza, beer and soda. The event, which costs $25, benefits the Asbury Park Youth Program and the Mount Carmel School.
