I planned this vacation to suit six people's interests. We arranged flights into Frankfurt and out of Munich to be sure we would not have to retrace our route and we rented a diesel van as our mode of transportation.
Day 1- Arrive in Frankfurt
Recommended Hotel: The Hilton, Hochstrasse 4 Frankfurt, 60313
Although we usually stay in local inns, it was nice to have something international and predictable after flying overnight and arriving at 8 am. This hotel is within walking distance of the Frankfurt train station, which connects directly to the airport. Just call the hotel ahead to find out the stop and to request an early check-in if your flight is overnight. The hotel also has a huge continental breakfast.
Sightseeing: Ask for a city map and walk around the entire circumference of the historical city by way of grassy parks. These beautifully kept areas will lead you past the river and through quaint wooded paths.
The Rmerberg is the heart of Old Town Frankfurt and has typical German restaurants and markets. It is especially romantic at night after a walk across the river's footbridge.
Tips: Check to be sure the continental breakfast is included for everyone in your room. We ended up being charged 2 extra breakfasts due to 4 only being included, which were US$80. Also, pick up your car from the rental company on the morning of day 2 so you do not have to pay for parking at this hotel.
Day 2 & 3- The Rhein River Valley
Recommended Hotel: Hotel zur Post, Oberstrasse 38, Bacharach, 55422
This is a very clean inn in a prime, old city location. It's very close to the docks for those wishing to do the hop-on/ hop-off boat tours of the region. The innkeeper is an energetic lady who serves an authentic German breakfast. It is not fancy but cozy and nicely maintained.
Sightseeing: Walk up to the castle in Bacharach, which has now been converted to a youth hostel. The views of the sunrise over the Rhein River are impressive. The path to the top is almost directly across form this hotel.
Also, take the boat tour and get off at some of the cities along the way for wine tastings and castle tours. We enjoyed walking around the ruins of the castle in St. Goar and Schonburg Castle in Oberwesel was by far the most beautiful terrace view for sipping riesling. Both are a steep hike but in St. Goar there is a mini train.
Tips: Free parking is available by the docks. Ask the innkeeper for directions. No internet available.
Day 4- Heidelberg
Recommended Hotel: Check Tripadvisor.com. We stayed in Stuttgart because we were tracing our family roots, but for any other visitor, Heidelberg is a must!
Day 5 & 6- The Black Forest
Recommended Hotel: Seehotel Wiesler, Strandbadstrae 5, Titisee 79822
This hotel has a German-style "cure spa" with saunas, Roman baths, massage rooms and mineral pools. It is located right on the lake and boasts beautiful views. The restaurant offers healthy, local foods.
Sightseeing: There are plenty of hiking trails around the city and lots of shopping (for Black Forest souvenirs and Oktoberfest outfits) on the main strip. You may also wish to go to Freiburg for the day because area train tickets are included in your hotel stay.
Tips: Internet is expensive here so hold off until the next hotel. Take reading material to the spa, since they have a sun room overlooking the lake with comfortable recliners. You may wish to leave a day early and check out Bodensee/ Lake Constance on the way to your next destination.
Day 7 & 8- Near Fussen
Recommended Hotel: Hotel Bergruh, Im Ebnat 2, Tiefenbach bei Oberstdorf, 87561
This hotel is 45 minutes from Fussen but an amazing retreat in the Allgu Alps. If you wish to avoid the tourists of Fussen this is your spot. A day trip to Fussen's Neuschwanstein Castle is easy from this location, and you can come back to a home-made meal right at the inn. Cow bells and church chimes will be all you hear in this peaceful hotel and a German-style spa awaits in the basement!
Sightseeing: Since this is in the mountains, take a stroll down a quiet country lane. A day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle may be on your agenda, as it is on every other tourist's check list.
Tips: Free parking in the lot of Hotel Bergruh. If you can not make it to a meal, they will pack you a lunch pack to go. Two days were calculated for this because one can be spent at the hotel and one can be spent in Fussen. In reality you could do it all in 1 day and stop to see Neuschwanstein between Tiefenbach and Munich.
Day 9 & 10- Munich
Recommended Hotel: Hotel Laimer, Laimerstrasse 40, 80639 Munich, Bavaria, Germany
The owners of this hotel were by far the nicest people we ran into in Germany. The husband studied in the USA and loves to chat about travel and give tips to visitors. They were very hospitable and served a large breakfast in the mornings. If traveling with more than 4 people on a budget, there is a "family room" available with 3 double beds in one room.
Sightseeing: If you are going for Oktoberfest, visit for one day in the busy, touristy tents and spend one day at the authentic local beer garden called Hirschgarten, meaning deer park.
Tips: Free parking. Tickets for subway and bus are avaialble right at the front desk. Free internet. Reserve a table at Oktoberfest. We visited Hippodrom and Hacker and were able to get tables even when booking as late as the summertime.
Day 11- Depart from Munich
You may wish to return your car on day 9 and avoid paying for day 10 and 11. The airport is a 35 min train ride from Munich's old town.
Before you go:
- Be sure to set up a system for ATM withdrawls. Most credit cards charge a premium for use outside the USA and many banks charge to cash travelers' checks, if they cash them at all. We opened Charles Schwab checking accounts because we could then use any ATM worldwide without a fee.
- Arrange for a rental car through Gemut Rentals. Web: www.gemut.com Email: andy@gemut.com
- Be sure your credit card offers insurance for driving in other countries.
- Renew passport/ apply for passport
