Sears launches new travel site

The latest big name brand to offer travel packages is.. Sears? According to a post in MSN Money yesterday, Sears Holdings is now offering a vacation packages through a new website that also lets customers put their trip on layaway.

The new site SearsVacations.com launches today with 100 vacations for less than $399. Customers can reserve a vacation and pay the cost gradually or buy prepaid vacations that can be financed with payment installments reports the Chicago Tribune, MSN Money constributor Kim Peterson writes. The website also accepts Sears cards for payment.

While the brand is known for bargains, the destinations they offer can also be found on high-end luxury travel sites as well, including cruises in the Bahamas, stays in Honululu, and Napa Valley. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Preparation and expending our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Minimizing expending and prices, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". The site, like any other travel site also books air travel and car rental, and packages around activities like golf and skiing.

Peterson also writes that Sears has been venturing into the online space since the retail business has been lagging, and SearsVacations.com shares similarities with Costco's Travel site costcotravel.com.

While Sears isn't the first name you think of for vacation travel, it's somewhat encouraging that big name companies want in on the travel business, particularly the segment where budget is highest priority.

Time will tell if we'll be booking travel packages on Target.com or Walmart.com, or at your local store in the near future.
