Think of the world's great food cities and what usually comes to mind? Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York City, San Francisco and Barcelona probably. But Lima, Peru? According to travel agents worldwide, yes. The results of the 19th World Travel Awards are in and Peru came out tops when it came to the World's Leading Culinary Destination.
Peru's recognition does not come as a surprise. Its capital, Lima, has been labeled South America's gastronomic capital for a few years already. Back in 2009, Bon Appetit named Lima as the Next Great Food City. The country's cuisine benefits from its geography and a long history of immigration. Abundant sunshine, rivers that supply water from the Andes to the flat lands, and a long coastline means lots of produce and seafood. Peru's population is not only comprised of Europeans, mestizos and indigenous peoples, but also Asians, especially Japanese and Chinese. The Chinese in particular have left a big impact on the cuisine, even giving rise to its own type of Chinese food, Peruvian-Chinese, served in the city's ubiquitous Chifas.
From street food to fancy restaurants, Lima has it all. Whether for lunch or dinner, you'll find the city's inhabitants out in full force. Ask some natives where to eat and you'll likely get an excited and impassioned argument about who has the best what.
What to try
When in Lima, here are just some of the things to not miss out on:
Tacu Tacu: traditional Peruvian dish consisting of spiced beans and rice that are fried together. Often accompanied with steak and onion salsa, fried eggs or fried plantains.
Ceviche: probably considered Peru's most well-known culinary export, ceviche is raw marinated seafood. Most of the ceviche restaurants in Lima are open only for lunch. One of the best places for ceviche is La Mar, Gastn Acurio's flagship outpost of the international franchise, one of which is located right here in San Francisco along the Embarcadero. Arrive early since it does not take reservations and is usually packed.
Lomo Saltado: sliced beef stir fried with onions, tomatoes, soy sauce, vinegar, and chili, served with rice or chips. Sound familiar? This is an example of the Chinese's influence on Peru's cuisine.
Fruit juices: if you're a fan of fresh fruit juices, you'll be spoiled for choice in Lima. Along with the regular strawberry, mango, papaya, and banana juices, go for cherimoya and lucuma, fruits that you don't see much of outside of Peru.
Chicaharron sandwich: great for breakfast, it's a sandwich made from pork and sweet potatoes.
Chicha Morada: after a hot day spent sightseeing, there's nothing better than sitting down to a large jug of chicha morada, a refreshing sweet drink made from purple corn.
Pisco Sour: Peru's most famous cocktail, made from Peruvian Pisco, lime or lemon juice, syrup, ice, egg white, and Angostura bitters. Beware; it packs a punch!
Where to eat:
Chef Gastn Acurio is the ambassador of Peruvian cuisine. Besides the aforementioned La Mar, he has Astrid & Gastn, recognized as one of the world's top restaurants. Try the Cuy pekins, guinea pig cooked and served like Peking Duck. Less pricier and more casual is T'anta, also from Gastn Acurio. An upscale chain, there's one location in the district of Miraflores and another in San Isidro. Try the Aji de Gallina, chicken smothered in a spicy creamy yellow sauce, served with rice, potatoes and a hard-boiled egg, and Huevos de Gastn, scrambled eggs with yucca and salchicha de huacha, a Peruvian crumbled sausage, and served with potato bread.
Join the locals for a sandwich and fruit juice from La Lucha. Don't let the long line intimidate you; service is quick.
Two restaurants with great views is Mangos and Restaurant Huaca Pucllana. While Mangos' food isn't particularly memorable, it does have an open terrace that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Restaurant Huaca Pucllana is set against the 500 A.D. Huaca Pucllana ruins, which is illuminated at night. It can't get more romantic than eating haute cuisine against a 1,500-year-old backdrop.
