I was recentlytold ofabout new Hawaiian cultural classes offered in Waikiki. I haven't stopped by to check it out yet but the list of instructors is excellent.
KUMUOLA The Tree of Life is presenting the classes at Waikikis International Market Place, that aretaught by Na Kumu o Hawaii or Hawaiian masters of various Hawaiian art forms. These practitioners are revered members of the Hawaiian community and have come together to share their gifts knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation by their Kupuna/ elders..jpg){kind=logo}
The International Market Place is located in the heart of Waikiki and the classes are offered in Building 212. Classers range from beginner to advanced with private classes also available. Classes are open to all ages from keiki / children to kupuna.
The class schedule includes Mele (Music), Oli (Chant), Olelo (Languages), Lomilomi (Massage) and Hana Noeau (Craft making). They are held daily starting at 10:30 am and are based on the availability of teachers.
Hula (Dance) is offered daily and is designed to get the whole family involved. Well-trained hula dancers, along with various Kumu hula will be teaching the classes.
- Keiki ..... 10 - 11 am
- Beginners ..... 11:30 am -12:30 pm
- Intermediate ..... 2 - 3 pm
- Advanced ..... 3:30 - 5 pm
- Private ..... after 5 pm
As a new activity for visitors (and residents), I would recommend calling ahead to see if the particular cultural class you are interested in will be taking place and to inquire what the fee will be for the class. There is a participation fee for each class.
