An emerging culinary trend blends Far East with Deep South to create a unique fusion of Cajun standards with a Vietnamese twist. The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. Vietnamese-Cajun restaurants are springing up all over the United States. One such restaurant, the Red Claw, has opened in Denver.
Located among the many strip malls of South Federal Blvd, the Red Claw is noticeable by its distinct, bright red crawfish logo. The restaurant interior is somewhat plain and a bit too dark. The decor could use some spicing up as could the choice of music.
All of the restaurants interior blandness disappears as you gaze at the menu. The top item is crawfish, served by the pound at market price. You are offered a choice of seasoning: Cajun, lemon pepper, garlic butter, or pineapple Cajun, and spice level: mild, medium, or hot. A two pound order comes with corn on the cob, a potato, and sausage.
All this is delivered in a plastic bag. Your waitperson will spread your table with a plastic cover and youll be offered bibs and a roll of paper towels. Youll need both. You eat with your bare hands, cracking open the crawfish, sucking out the succulent meat and licking the tasty sauce off your fingers.
Other items on the menu include chicken wings with a variety of sauces, blue and Dungeness crab, and baskets of fried shrimp, calamari and catfish. Lest you think this is all Cajun, other menu items include Oc Buou and Oc Gau, snails served in lemongrass fish sauce, and crawfish fried rice.
Dont expect the gumbo to be classically Southern. The seafood gumbo had a flavor that blended the chefs Cajun and Vietnamese sensibilities for a unique and delectable dish.
The overall price is reasonable. For example, $8.95 for the seafood gumbo, served with rice, $7.95 for the fried shrimp basket, served with Cajun fries, and $6.95 for a dozen wings. The cost of certain seafood will fluctuate according to market price.
Parking is limited and can be a problem. You might have to park on the street or in another lot.
