I recently booked my next trip, so I've been slashing through a thicket of information to decide which guidebook will accompany me. My last travel experience was occasionally marred by a less-than-reliable book, and I've learned over the years that a good guide will save you money, time and frustration.
Before you buy your guidebook:
- Honestly evaluate your travel style. Different publishing houses offer books that serve travelers of all stripes, so there's one out there to suit you. A lot of travelers get competitive about roughing it, but if you're really more comfortable not sharing your sleeping space with 11 other people and a cockroach or two, it's time to 'fess up, if only to yourself. In the end, you'll want to have the book that speaks your language.
- It's not always a sure bet, but I like to check the reviews that specific books get on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com or other bookstore sites. It can give you an idea of issues that people have had with the booksor how they've saved the dayin your chosen destination. Use the information as a supplement, not as gospel; some complaints can come from people who have an interest in promoting a competing book.
- Check the publishing date! If a book came out three years ago, things have changed. To what degree, it's hard to say from afar, but you can bet there is some new, essential information that's not in an older book. This particularly applies to developing countries and less popular destinationsnew roads unfurl, hotels open or re-furbish and transportation options are likely to fluctuate quite a bit.
- Always check to see when the next editions are due to come out. For my next trip, I e-mailed the publishing company of that the guide I liked best, and found out that an updated version was being released just weeks prior to my departure.
- Head to the store and grab a pile of guides to peruse. Look for writing that keeps you engaged, but pay close attention to function. If you know that there is one specific place you want to go, pretend you're on the ground with each book and see which gives you the information that makes you feel most comfortable.
